Unemployment rate increases in January

January broke a streak of six consecutive months the unemployment rate had gone down in Johnson County.

Despite the increase, January’s rate was significantly better than the 3.7% jobless rate in January 2021, even as many businesses were almost fully recovered from coronavirus pandemic-related lockdown measures.

Of 92 Indiana counties, just five had lower unemployment rates than Johnson County in December. The county’s jobless rate is also lower than the state’s rate of 2.4%. The Indiana unemployment rate in December stood at 1.3%.

Overall, more than 83,000 Johnson County residents had jobs last month, while less than 1,500 members of the eligible workforce did not.

The data comes from a monthly report released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, which tracks unemployment.

For the fourth consecutive month, LaGrange County, in northeast Indiana, had the lowest unemployment rate at 1.4%. For the second straight month, Lake County, in northwest Indiana, had the highest at 4.2%.
