College gets $500,000 gift from Franklin resident

Franklin College will use about $500,000 it received from the estate of a longtime Franklin resident and small business owner to fund financial assistance for student travel and learning opportunities.

The opportunities will be geared specifically for students in pre-medical studies and field biology, according to a Franklin College news release.

The donor, Phil Smith, attended Ball State University and retired after a 31-year photography career, according to the news release.

The fund created from his donation will be named the Phil Smith Engaged Learning Fund, the news release says.
