Shirley J. Campbell

Shirley J. (Mackey) Campbell, age 88 passed away Wednesday morning, March 2, 2022. She has called the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin her home for the past 19 years. Shirley was a former resident of Morgantown.

Shirley was born August 29, 1933 in East St. Louis, Illinois to her parents, the late Charles Mackey and Margaret (Sutton) Mackey-Harvey. She was a 1951 graduate of Center Grove High School. Shirley married James D. ‘Cash’ Campbell on October 13, 1951 in Providence. He preceded her in death on October 23, 2003 after fifty-two loving years of marriage. Shirley was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Melvin Mackey.

She is survived by her children, Linda Jo Campbell of Indianapolis and John ‘Doug’ (Denise) Campbell of Brown County; grandchildren, Crystal Campbell of Brown County and Leslie (Jake) Wester of Columbus; and a great granddaughter, Adaline Wester of Columbus.

Shirley worked as a Bank Teller for Bargersville State Bank and later in El Paso, Texas during the 1950’s. She went on to own and operate Campbell’s Market in Providence during the 1960’s. She later worked alongside her husband, Jim, who was an Auctioneer and owned & operated Campbells Auctioneering and Campbell & Morris Equipment in Bargersville.

Shirley attended Cottonwood Christian Church in Brown County and the Mt. Zion Separate Baptist Church in Morgantown. She was a 70-year member of the Trafalgar Order of Eastern Star #466 and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Shirley was a former Girl Scout, Cub Scout and 4H Leader in Brown County. She was a seeker of knowledge and was an avid reader of non-fiction. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and feeding & watching the birds.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on Sunday, March 27th from 1-3 p.m. at the Franklin Parks & Rec. Center – Beeson Hall: 396 Branigin Blvd in Franklin. An Eastern Star Memorial Service will also be held during the gathering. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, March 8th at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown. Services have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.
