Police: Indy man drove car into Greenwood home

Police arrested an Indianapolis man after he drove into a Greenwood home while under the influence of alcohol.

William A. Hinton, 39, was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated — endangerment, a misdemeanor. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

Greenwood police were called to the 100 block of Mercator Drive around 7 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a report of a vehicle crashing into a home. When police arrived, they found the homeowners and their infant child sitting outside the home, along with the driver of the vehicle that crashed. The car had driven into the home’s garage, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The homeowners told police they were inside the home at the time of the crash and said no one else was in the home. Police then asked Hinton if he drove the crashed car and he said yes. He also told police no one else was inside the car, and that he had “turned left, and it (the car) wouldn’t stop turning left,” the report says.

Police asked Hinton for his driver’s license and he had difficulty removing it from his wallet, so he handed the wallet to officers for them to remove the license. Hinton told police he thought his car malfunctioned while he was driving through the neighborhood, the report says.

While police were speaking with Hinton, they detected the odor of alcohol from his breath. Officers asked him how much he had drunk, and he said he had two beers a few hours earlier, around 3 to 4 p.m., the report says.

Hinton then refused medical treatment and underwent sobriety testing. Officers conducted three tests, and Williams failed each one. Hinton was then given a portable breath test, which showed he had a blood alcohol content level of 0.1, just over the legal limit, according to the report.

Police then asked Hinton if he would consent to a blood draw. He agreed and was taken to a local hospital for a blood draw, which was sent to Greenwood police for testing, the report says.

Hinton was then taken to the Johnson County jail on a $250 bond and has since been released.
