Local police warn of phone scam

Local law enforcement have received several reports of a telephone scam.

The people conducting the scam are calling victims’ phones and leaving voicemails identifying themselves as a member of the Greenwood Police Department. When the victim calls back, they get a voice message stating they are calling a member of the Greenwood Police Department and to leave their name and a call back number, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

Shortly after doing so, the victim receives a phone call by a person identifying themselves as a member of the Greenwood Police Department. The person then tells the victim they have an arrest warrant out on them and they must pay a certain amount of money to the caller or the victim will be arrested, according to the news release.

The Greenwood Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of the scam. Neither police department would ever call a resident and ask them for money. If anyone ever receives a phone call from a person claiming to be a police officer and asking them for money, they should immediately hang up and call the police, the news release says.
