Man led Greenwood police on 25-minute car chase across southside

An Indianapolis man led Greenwood police on a 25-minute car chase early Monday morning across the southside.

Americo Cavazos Jr., 23, was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement in a motor vehicle, a felony, as well as resisting law enforcement, possession of marijuana and two counts of reckless driving, all misdemeanors. The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what, if any, charges to file.

About 1:30 a.m., police observed a green Dodge Charger southbound from County Line Road on Meridian Street at high speeds, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

Officers attempted to pull over the car, driven by Cavazos, at the intersection of Carol Drive and Bentwood Street, but he fled northbound on Carol Drive. He made his way to County Line Road, and then northbound on Interstate 65, where he sped up and began weaving in and out of traffic, according to the report.

Cavazos exited the interstate at Keystone Avenue and made his way across the southside to State Road 37, where he drove through a construction zone at high speeds, the report says.

He made his way back across the southside, drove through a mailbox in the 20 block of Banta Road and continued through a driveway and into a yard before stopping between two houses, according to the report.

Cavazos left the car in drive and fled on foot. He jumped a fence and fell into a pile of brush on the other side of the fence where he was arrested, the report says.

He told police a passenger in the car had held a gun to his head, though officers said they saw no passengers. He refused to speak with them any further about the incident, according to the report.

Police found 50.5 grams of THC edibles, 8.5 grams of raw marijuana in the center console and a THC vaporizer pen on Cavazos, the report says.

Cavazos was driving while suspended, and the license plate on the car expired on March 14. He also has pending charges for resisting law enforcement in a motor vehicle and reckless driving, according to online court records.

He was taken to the Johnson County jail where he is held on $4,200 bond.
