Greenwood man charged with rape, sexual battery

A Greenwood man has been charged after a woman told police he raped, choked and forcibly held her down.

David L. Kent, Jr., 28, was charged with rape, a Level 3 felony; domestic battery, a Level 5 felony; and sexual battery and strangulation, both Level 6 felonies. If convicted, he faces up to 27 years in prison.

The morning of March 5, Kent was at a residence with the woman when he asked if they could have sexual intercourse. The woman said no, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Johnson County Superior Court 3 on Tuesday.

A short time later he asked again, and she again said no. He then asked a third time, and she said no. Kent then told the victim he was “going to do it anyways,” and forcibly held her down on a bed, according to the affidavit.

She tried to move away from Kent but was unable to, and later yelled for someone to get a neighbor to help. During the incident, she bit and hit Kent to try to get him away from her, the affidavit says.

A witness then came inside the home and asked if everything was alright. The victim said no, and Kent stopped once he heard the neighbor’s voice and moved away from her, the victim told Greenwood police.

The woman and children in the home left after the incident, according to the affidavit.

She told police a few days later she had several injuries resulting from the incident, including a bite mark, the affidavit says.

When police spoke with the witness a few days later, he said he came over after one of children told him what was happening at the residence. He entered the home and tried to enter the bedroom, but the door was locked. He then asked if everything was alright, and told police he could hear movement in the room, the affidavit says.

The witness left the home to call 911, but did not call 911 because the victim came outside and said she would call, according to the affidavit.

Police spoke with Kent on March 23. He told police they had an argument that became physical. He told police he choked the victim but did not remember biting her during the incident, the affidavit says.

Kent told police the altercation ended when the witness came over. He could not tell police what the argument was about, but said he did not rape the victim, the affidavit says.

A few weeks later, Kent voluntary asked police for a meeting about the incident. He gave police a letter which had more details about the incident because he believed there were “holes in his story,” the affidavit says.

Kent also told police he wanted to get help and wanted to make sure he did not miss any court dates, according to the affidavit.

Kent was arrested Thursday, and was taken to the Johnson County jail on a $16,000 bond.
