Baseball

Grizzly Cubs roll

Franklin scored nine first-inning runs en route to an easy 18-8 victory over Cathedral on Saturday. Jackson Henry had a home run and six RBIs for the Grizzly Cubs (10-6), while Drew Doty drove in four runs and Nolan Netter had four hits.

Woodmen split with Cardinals

Greenwood scored two seventh-inning runs for a 3-1 win over Southport but dropped the other half of the twinbill, 7-1. Conner Stidham went the distance in the win, striking out six for the Woodmen (4-7).

Warriors drop two

Whiteland lost both halves of a doubleheader against Jennings County, falling by scores of 7-4 and 17-5. Donovan Woodall and Josh Medina each had a three-hit game for the Warriors (9-7).

Grizzly Cubs top Hawks

No. 12 Franklin kept its perfect season going Saturday with a 5-0 sweep of Decatur Central, clinching at least a share of the Mid-State Conference title. Rylie Wilkison, Chelsie Rayl and Emma Williams took the three singles points, Haley Haldeman and Ailyn Hendricks won at first doubles and Ava Pinnick and Eleanor Stillabower came out on top at second doubles.

Trojans take one of three

Center Grove defeated Brebeuf Jesuit, 3-2, at the Zionsville Invitational but lost to the host Eagles 5-0 and Crown Point by a 3-2 count. Emerson Donaldson had two wins on the day at third singles for the Trojans, while the No. 2 doubles team of Madison Herron and Peri Small also earned two points.

Warriors sweep tourney

Host Whiteland swept its invitational, posting a 5-0 victory over Shelbyville and 4-1 wins over University and International. Candace Stephenson won three singles matches for the Warriors (11-5), while Brenna Atchison had two points in singles and one in doubles and the No. 2 doubles team of Cathy Nguyen and Kinsey Shipp went 3-0.

Center Grove takes fourth

No. 2 Center Grove finished fourth at the prestigious Hall of Fame Invitational, totaling 318 as a team to finish two shots behind 16th-ranked Valparaiso and one back of No. 4 Silver Creek and No. 13 Crown Point. Drew Hardin and Drew Rowen led the Trojans with respective rounds of 75 and 76, while Luke Beetz carded an 83 and Nate Olson an 84. Franklin turned in a team score of 363, led by Kadin Gibson’s 84.

Baseball sweeps Pioneers

Franklin College rallied for a 9-6 win during the front half of a twinbill and took the nightcap, 5-4, to finish off a sweep of Transylvania at the University of Kentucky on Saturday. Sean Thomas and Logan Demkovich had home runs for the Grizzlies (25-11, 10-4 HCAC), while Alex Reinoehl saved both games to match the school’s single-season record of eight.

Track and field fifth, sixth at HCACs

Franklin College’s women finished fifth and the men sixth at the HCAC outdoor championships. Haley Makowski (800 meters) and Taylor Tatlock (javelin) earned silver medals for the Grizzly women, while Zak Wiley took silver in both the discus and hammer throw for the men.

Women’s lax tops Ravens

Baleigh Riddle had five goals and Anya Glodowski added four goals and four assists in Franklin College’s 18-11 win over Anderson. Victoria Simmons contributed four goals and two assists, setting single-season and career assist records for the Grizzlies (5-8, 4-2 HCLC) in the process.
