First-time candidate takes District 57

In a face-off between two first time candidates for the Indiana House, Craig Haggard emerged from Tuesday’s Republican primary as the victor.

Haggard, of Mooresville, received 56% of the vote in Johnson County for House District 57 , compared to Melinda Griesemer, of White River Township, who had 44% locally.

Haggard will move on to the general election in November. At this time, he is unopposed.

“I’m humbled and blessed that people thought that I was good enough to represent them, and I hope I don’t disappoint. I appreciate all of my family and friends, and everyone who gave of themselves to help me win this seat,” he said.

Indiana House District 57 was recently redistricted, moving from Shelby County to now cover the extreme northwestern portion of Johnson County, as well as portions of Morgan and Hendricks counties.

Haggard, who served in the U.S. Marines and retired as a lieutenant colonel in the Indiana Air National Guard, decided to run for office to continue his service to the public.

If elected, he pledged to address the shortage of qualified workers in the area, and to work on strengthening and securing the state’s energy infrastructure. He also would support local farmers, who have ongoing concerns about the cost of land and development of formerly rural areas. At the same time, he wanted to make sure those in rural areas have access to quality internet.
