Traffic blitz planned for month of May

Local law enforcement will be increasing traffic enforcement this month, as part of a statewide initiative.

Johnson County Law Enforcement Coalition, which is composed of local law enforcement agencies, will use federal funding to put additional officers on the roads to enforce Indiana laws.

The effort will put emphasis on impaired driving, seat belt use and properly regarding stop lights and signs. The goal of this high-visibility enforcement effort is to deter impaired and dangerous driving behaviors that are more common during the month of May, a heavy traffic season for the state, according to information released by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Monday.

Law enforcement officers will complete specialized patrols designed to detect impaired drivers and will also be on the lookout for motorists and passengers, including children, who are not buckled up. Anyone caught driving without a seatbelt or transporting children who are not properly restrained will be cited, along with those who disregard traffic lights or signs. Anyone caught driving under the influence with an illegal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher will be arrested, officials say.
