College notebook: Shepherd paces Duke at regional

Duke junior Erica Shepherd led the Blue Devils women’s golf team at the NCAA regional in Franklin, Tennessee. The Center Grove graduate tied for 11th place individually with a 2-under-par score of 214, though the team missed advancing to the NCAA championships by one stroke.

Center Grove

Louisville sprinter Kiyah Yeast ran a time of 24.06 seconds in the 200-meter dash in a preliminary race at the Atlantic Coast Conference track and field meet.

Franklin College reliever Chris Foote pitched the final inning of the Grizzlies’ 7-3 win over Anderson at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament, allowing two hits and a run.

Pitcher Drue Young picked up the win as the Indiana Wesleyan baseball team defeated Marian, 4-2, to open the Crossroads League tournament. Young pitched eight innings, allowed five hits and struck out three.

Alabama sophomore Bryce Eblin scored twice as the Crimson Tide baseball team defeated visiting LSU, 8-3. Eblin singled in Alabama’s 13-6 win over Jacksonville State.

Southern Indiana first baseman Lexi Fair doubled, homered and drove in five runs to lead the team to a 9-5 triumph over Maryville in the Great Lakes Valley Conference softball tournament.

Mount St. Joseph third baseman Kaci Finchum doubled as the softball team defeated Transylvania, 5-3, in the title game of the HCAC tournament.

Greenwood

Dominique Proctor tripled and Lexy Rees doubled for the University of Indianapolis softball squad as it opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament with a 4-1 defeat of Rockhurst. Proctor doubled in a 1-0 loss to Southern Indiana in the title game, while Rees doubled as the Greyhounds opened play in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional with an 8-2 win against Findlay.

The Taylor baseball team won the Crossroads League tournament title with four victories; junior T.J. Bass accounted for four home runs and a double to lead the way.

UIndy thrower Emily Bonser finished third in both the discus and hammer throw and fifth in the shot put at the GLVC track and field meet.

Franklin

UIndy’s Andrew Bixler placed 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s track and field championships.

Whiteland

Anderson designated hitter Brady Reed singled and doubled, but the Ravens lost to Franklin College, 7-3, at the HCAC baseball tourney. Anderson downed Hanover earlier in the day, 6-2, with Reed contributing a two-run double.

Morehead State pitcher Luke Helton tossed a complete game in the team’s 5-3 loss at Eastern Illinois, giving up 10 hits and striking out six in eight innings of work.

Senior right fielder Addison Csikos scored two of the Franklin College runs as the softball team downed Defiance, 16-2, in six innings in an elimination game in the HCAC tournament. Csikos then singled and doubled as the Grizzlies’ season came to an end with a 7-6 loss to Transylvania.

Mount St. Joseph freshman Macy Cornelius singled and stole a base in a 3-1 win against Defiance in the HCAC softball tournament, helping her team claim the championship.

UIndy senior Michaela Adams finished eighth in the discus and ninth in the hammer throw at the GLVC track and field meet.

Liberty runner Will Jefferson took sixth in the men’s 1,500-meter preliminary race at the ASUN outdoor track and field championships.
