UPDATE: IMPD, Greenwood SWAT incident stems from warrant service

1:03 p.m. update

Indianapolis police revealed the name of the man arrested during a SWAT call at a Greenwood mobile home subdivision late Tuesday afternoon.

Greenwood police responded to a call from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department late Tuesday afternoon asking for SWAT team assistance for a warrant arrest at the Greenwood Estates mobile home community at U.S. 31 and Stop 18 Road, Matt Fillenwarth, Greenwood’s assistant chief of police, said Tuesday.

IMPD requested assistance to serve three warrants on Roberto Melendrez-Moran, 23, of Greenwood. The warrants were for two cases in Marion County and a Johnson County probation violation, said Lt. Shane Foley, an IMPD spokesperson.

The situation caused Central Nine Career Center to go on lockdown Tuesday afternoon and students who lived in Greenwood Estates to be temporarily taken back to school until Melendrez-Moran was taken into custody, according to an email from Clark-Pleasant Community Schools.

Greenwood’s SWAT team was called to assist IMPD because officers believed Melendrez-Moran was armed. Because of this belief and charges against Melendrez-Moran, the warrant was considered high-risk and required an elevated response, such as a SWAT team, Foley said.

There was no specific danger to the public and no shots were fired during the arrest, Foley said. Johnson County Animal Control was called to the scene because there were multiple animals in the house, he said.

The first warrant stems from charges filed Tuesday in Marion County Superior Court 30. Melendrez-Moran was charged with dealing cocaine with an amount of 10 or more grams, a Level 2 felony; possession of cocaine with an amount of 28 or more grams, a Level 3 felony; and dealing in marijuana with an amount between 30 grams to 10 pounds.

Melendrez-Moran’s second warrant was also out of Marion County for a misdemeanor charge of resisting law enforcement that was filed in January 2020. He failed to appear for a court hearing in January 2021, leading to the warrant being issued, online court records show.

The last warrant was a Johnson County for a probation violation. Melendrez-Moran was charged in April 2019 with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and was sentenced to probation on the charge in January 2020. However, in September 2020, the probation was revoked and an arrest warrant was issued, online court records show.
