Letter: Reader calls Statehouse Republicans to do more

To the Editor:

Indiana’s hard working government is touting a tax refund to Hoosiers in the huge amount of $125. Little is said about the billions socked away that could also be used as refunds or on services to help the state thus lowing costs in other places. It appears they think it’s best to create as many taxes as possible, create an exorbitant amount of revenue and do nothing except bank that profit is a better solution. Republicans are responsible for creating many new taxes in the last six years. I say this without remorse as I am a lifelong Republican who is disappointed in the party’s recent performance.

Let’s look at what that magical $125 refund can do today:

– Pay only a portion of one’s monthly gas or electric bill;

– Pay for less than a 1/3 of a month of property tax;

– A partial week of groceries;

– Or maybe it can be used to offset the state’s 57 cents per gallon gas tax that continues to rise. Fun fact: Indiana is the 17th highest gas tax in the country.

Raising another tax as a solution to a problem doesn’t take any critical thinking skills. We continue to elect these same politicians over and over with the outcome always the same. Nothing changes and your paycheck continues to erode because of taxes.

I would expect the governor wants us to heap praises on him for his hard work in giving out the $125. I say “big stinking deal.” How about you politicians figure out how to freeze the property tax rate because of the current market situation to really help homeowners or giving a sizeable tax refund amount to help everyone? I’ll be waiting, but I’m not going to hold my breath.
