Memorial Day events planned for this weekend

Local residents can honor those who served during Memorial Day events today and Monday.

The Greenwood and Whiteland Veterans Of Foreign Wars and the Greenwood American Legion Post 252 will jointly sponsor their Annual Memorial Service Program at five cemeteries today.

Services will begin at Rock Lane Cemetery at 9 a.m. followed by Greenwood Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., Mount Pleasant Cemetery at 10 a.m., Olive Branch Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. and at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 11 a.m. The invocation, the setting of the wreath, rifle volley and taps will be conducted in each of the cemeteries at the flagpole area.

Also this morning, the Franklin American Legion will place flags on veterans’ graves at Greenlawn Cemetery at 10 a.m. today.

There will be a short program followed by a rifle salute and taps. Families and children are welcome.

On Monday, the community is invited to the annual Memorial Day service, which will be held at 11 a.m. Monday on the courthouse lawn in downtown Franklin. The event will include remarks by local officials, patriotic music by the Franklin Community Band, and the laying of memorial wreaths.

Prior to the service, people will gather in downtown Franklin for the Memorial Day Mile. The race starts at 8:55 a.m., and features men’s and women’s competitive runs, as well as a family fun run. Registration must be done in advance, and can be completed at memorialdaymile.org.
