Magistrate applications open following Cummins’ Superior 3 appointment

The judges of the Johnson Circuit and Superior Courts are now accepting applications to fill the open magistrate position.

The vacancy was created when Judge Douglas B. Cummins was appointed this month to serve as judge of Johnson Superior Court 3.

Cummins, who had served as magistrate for Johnson County Superior Courts since 2015, was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Lance Hamner, who resigned from the office in February to run for Johnson County Prosecutor.

The magistrate conducts hearings on court cases as assigned by the judges, which could include various pretrial hearings in criminal cases, small cases and petitions for protective orders, according to a news release from the Johnson County courts. All qualified candidates are invited to apply.

A candidate must be a licensed attorney in good standing in the state of Indiana and engaged in the practice of law for at least five years, according to the news release. The candidate should also be a resident of Johnson County or be willing to relocate by Oct. 1.

“This position represents a valuable opportunity for service to the citizens of Johnson County. We are looking forward to speaking with candidates about how they can contribute to our justice system,” said Kevin Barton, judge of Johnson Superior Court 1, in a statement.

Applications are available on the Johnson County website and must be electronically submitted by 4 p.m. June 17.

Interviews will take place July 1.
