FRANKLIN, IN.
Norman Ross Carr, 102, of the Otterbein Franklin SeniorLife Community in Franklin, IN passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2022.
He was born November 17, 1919, in Indianapolis, IN to Rugg Ross Carr and Opal (Breedlove) Carr. He married Mary Kathryn “Kay” (Joyner) Carr on July 31, 1943, in Indianapolis, IN; she preceded him in death on May 22, 2011.
He was a United States Army Veteran of WW II having being been inducted on December 31, 1941 at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis; IN. Norman was honorably discharged on September 16, 1943 due to combat wounds at the Battle of Buna, New Guinea having received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation. Upon his discharge, Norman began working at RCA, then Coca-Cola before moving to Boone County to farm. Later he moved to Shelby County to begin farming with an uncle and continued to expand until his retirement in 1982. He supplemented his living by working part-time at L.S. Ayers and Company during the 1970’s. Upon retirement, he and his wife spent their winters in Fort Myers, Florida during the 1980’s until the mid-1990’s.
Norman served on the school Board of Southwestern Consolidated School Corporation in n Shelby County, IN from 1966 until 1969. He also served on the Shelby County Fair Board during the 1960’s. After retirement, he took up golf, card playing, traveling and eating out. He was a member of the Jollity United Methodist Church in Shelby County, IN and attended Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin, IN most recently.
Survivors include his two daughters Barbara L. “Bobbi” Johnson of Fishers, IN and Sharalee J. “Sharry” Kabrich of Edinburgh, IN, three grandsons Troy D. Kabrich (Jody Gray) of Clayton, NC, Thomas “Scott” Kabrich (Kimberly Cleveland) of Wolcottville, IN, Todd R. Kabrich (Jill Pliske Kabrich) of Tomball, TX, one granddaughter Teri L. Kabrich of Decatur, IN, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Norman, as an only child, considered his mother’s nephews as close as brothers and those surviving are Billy Jo Tolson of Redondo Beach, CA, and Mrs. Tom (Betty Fox) Nelson, Shelbyville, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents Rugg Ross Carr and Opal (Breedlove) Carr, his wife Mary Kathryn “Kay” (Joyner) Carr, an infant daughter at birth Janet Kay Carr, son-in-laws Terry Johnson and Thomas Kabrich and his mother’s nephews, Robert Pauls, Richard Pauls, Tom Nelson, and Jack Nelson, all formerly of Indianapolis and Shelby County.
The Reverends Andy Kinsey, Dr. William “Ted” Murphy and David Mark Owens will conduct a service on Friday June 3, 2022 at 11AM at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin, IN and will be live-streamed at www.swartzmortuary.com.
Friends may call Thursday, June 2, 2022 from 4PM until 8PM at the mortuary.
Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, IN with full military honors being conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard and Franklin American Legion Post #205 Honor Guard.
