Lane closures on U.S. 31 to begin Thursday in Franklin

Drivers should expect lane closures beginning this week for a bridge project on U.S. 31 in Franklin.

Pacific Painting Company, a contractor for the Indiana Department of Transportation, plans to closes lanes starting on or after Thursday at the U.S. 31 bridge over Youngs Creek in Franklin. The $164,000 project will overlay the deck of the bridge, located just south of Jefferson Street and State Road 144, according to an INDOT news release.

The outside lanes of both northbound and southbound U.S. 31 will close beginning on after Thursday, causing traffic to be moved to the inside lanes for travel. The northbound lane closures will begin south of Jefferson Street and the southbound closure will begin south of South Street, INDOT officials say.

Additionally, traffic from Hospital Road will be restricted to right turns only onto southbound U.S. 31. There will not be access to northbound U.S. 31 for the duration of the project, according to INDOT.

In mid-June — tentatively June 12 — lane closures will move to the outside lanes of U.S. 31, allowing crews to complete work on the inside lanes, INDOT officials say.

The construction is expected to be completed by the end of June. INDOT encourages drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and consider worker safety when travelling through active construction zones.
