Camp Atterbury hosting community social Saturday

The Camp Atterbury Veterans Memorial Association is hosting a Community Social 11 a.m until 2 p.m. Saturday at the Camp Atterbury Museum and the Outdoor Memorial.

The social is free and open to people of all ages. The event will kick off with opening remarks by Col. Michael Grundman and a fly-over by the Columbus Indiana HUEY, according to a press release on the event.

The HUEY is a UH1H Iroquois model helicopter made famous for service during the Vietnam War. The HUEY will remain on temporary display following the opening ceremony. Helicopter rides will be available for a fee of $100 for adults and $50 for kids, the release says.

Free light snacks will be offered and additional food vendors will be onsite with food for purchase, the release says.

The museum is located in the Camp Atterbury Welcome Center on Hospital Road, on the right side of the road just before Durbin Street.

The museum will be open during the event. The museum covers Camp Atterbury’s history beginning in 1942 when 40,000 acres of farmland was turned into a massive active Army military training post, the release says.

The memorial commentates Camp Atterbury’s history with a display of military weapons, equipment and vehicles surrounding a stage area where current military ceremonies and presentations are held, the release says.
