Greenwood police investigating fatal hit-and-run

A Greenwood man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident late Wednesday night.

First responders were called to the 500 block of North State Road 135 at about 11:46 p.m. Wednesday on the report of a personal injury accident. When officers arrived, they found a man dead on the scene. The man was identified as Andrew M. Benkert, 23, of Greenwood, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

It appears that Benkert was the victim of a hit-and-run accident. He was likely walking in the area when a car hit him and fled the scene, police say.

The Johnson County Coroner’s Office is conducting a death investigation, and an autopsy is pending, according to a coroner’s office news release.

Debris from an older model black Chevy Trailblazer was recovered at the scene. Based on the debris, police say the SUV would have heavy front end damage.

Detectives are still actively investigating the incident. Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Greenwood Police Department Tip Line at 317-865-0300 or submit a tip anonymously online at greenwood.in.gov/police.
