J.R. (Jarvis) Bishop

ST. CHARLES, IL

J.R. (Jarvis) Bishop, age 84, a resident of St. Charles, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. He was born in Oakland City, Indiana on March 22, 1938 the youngest of eight children of Jon &Edna Bishop of Princeton, Indiana.

J.R. was an athlete his entire life. He played baseball, basketball &football at Princeton High School &Franklin College, where he was the captain of the football team. He was the state leading scorer (112 points) and was selected to the Little All-American Football Team. He graduated from Indiana University with a Masters Degree in Education. J.R. began his teaching and coaching career at Franklin High School (Indiana) where he was head coach for seven years. He continued his career at Lawrence High School in Indianapolis where he led the team to a record undefeated season in 1979. He also coached at Naperville Central High School for three years and led the Wheaton College Thunder as head coach for 14 years and assistant coach for 10 years. J.R. was proud to have turned these struggling programs into successful ones.

He was active in FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and longtime English teacher. He was a regular attender at Chapel Street Church in Geneva, Illinois. He was also the president of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at Franklin College.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janet; his children Cheryl (Ronald) Royce &Keith (Elise) Bishop; his grandchildren Jamie Ruth Bishop, Anne Elise Bishop &Blaise Randall Bishop. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his seven siblings.

A visitation will be held at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL, on Sunday, June 26, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at College Church, 332 E. Seminary Ave., Wheaton, IL, on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private at Wheaton Cemetery.
