Greenwood police seek help IDing vehicle from fatal hit-and-run

Police have released more information on the suspect vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run earlier this month.

First responders were called to the 500 block of North State Road 135 at about 11:445 p.m. June 15 to a hit-and-run accident with a pedestrian struck. When officers arrived, they found a man dead at the scene. The man was identified as Andrew M. Benkert, 23, of Greenwood, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

Benkert was walking southbound on State Road 135 when a car hit him and fled the scene, police say.

Police had initially said the suspect vehicle was an older model Chevrolet Trailblazer, after recovering debris from the scene. On Tuesday, police released more information on the vehicle after reviewing security camera footage from a nearby business.

The suspect vehicle is now described as a 2002-2008 model Chevy Trailblazer that is missing the right side door mirror and mirror assembly. The vehicle also most likely has damage to the right front headlight, right fender and bumper, and may be missing a gold-colored Chevy emblem from the front grill, police say.

In the video recovered by police, the suspect vehicle is seen stopping north of the crash site at 11:03 p.m. Once stopped, the driver turns on the hazard lights and then moves north on State Road 135 and turns onto Fry Road. After the turn, the vehicle’s hazard lights were still on, police say.

Detectives are still actively investigating the incident. Police are asking anyone with information about the case to contact the Greenwood Police Department Tip Line at 317-865-0300 or submit a tip anonymously online at greenwood.in.gov/police.
