Dr. Mary Ann Hilz

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA

Dr. Mary Ann Hilz, 84, passed away on June 29, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones. She resided in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the past 3 years, yet lived the majority of her life in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was born on June 9, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Dr. James Vincent Cortese and Eleanore (Mariani) Cortese.

Mary Ann attended Sacred Heart High School in Indianapolis and carried her Catholic faith with her throughout her life. She attended college at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where she graduated with honors in Chemistry. She excelled in academics and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1965 specializing in Radiology. As a pioneer for women in medicine, she inspired her daughter and countless other women to believe that anything is possible in life with hard work, dedication and determination.

Mary Ann practiced medicine at the Cortese Clinic/Southeast Medical Surgical Center on the south side of Indianapolis and was recognized in 2015 for serving her patients and the medical community for 50 years. She was a humble woman who deeply cared for her patients and loved practicing medicine.

Mary Ann had a profound passion for sports, especially football. She was a fanatic for the Indianapolis Colts and a season ticket holder since their arrival in Indianapolis. She cherished going to home games with family and friends.

Mary Ann’s true loves were her grandson’s Vincent and Jack Elrod. Her smile radiated in their presence. She enjoyed watching them play sports and spending time with them. Because of her love for children, she donated often to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Mary Ann was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Sister. She is survived by her daughter Dr. Gina (Hilz) Elrod and husband Ryan Elrod, grandsons Vincent Elrod and Jack Elrod, sister Mrs. Gloria Bjerke and husband Lee Bjerke. She was preceded in death by her son, James M. Hilz II. She was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. She is now at peace in God’s heavenly kingdom reunited with her beloved son, Jamie.

Memorial service for Mary Ann will be Saturday July 9, 2022, at Calvary Cemetery Chapel from 12:00-1:30pm with visitation from 12:00-12:45pm followed by a prayer service at Calvary Cemetery 435 W.
