Alzheimer’s Association plans Greenwood pickleball fundraiser

A new pickleball tournament will raise awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association when it takes place in Greenwood later this month.

The inaugural Making Memories Classic pickleball tournament will take place from July 29-31 at Craig Park in Greenwood. The tournament is being put on by Dr. David Mandelbaum, Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter board member. Greenwood pickleball stars Jade and Jackie Kawamoto, twin sisters who played tennis at Greenwood High School and the University of Dayton and now play for Major League Pickleball, will co-host the tournament, according to a Alzheimer’s Association news release.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, and is considered the nation’s fastest-growing sport. Mandelbaum and his wife, Anna, are taking their passion for the game and turning it into a fundraiser in honor of David’s parents, Dr. Isidore “Iz” Mandelbaum and Germaine “Gerry” Mandelbaum, both of whom died with dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association hopes to raise $25,000 from the tournament, the news release says.

The tournament will be round robin-style play featuring doubles and singles events on seven outdoor courts. There will also be a professional exhibition match and food trucks.

The deadline to register for the tournament is July 15. Registration costs $30 and includes a t-shirt, player swag and three levels of medals, the news release says.
