Edinburgh man sentenced on theft, trespassing charges from May incident

An Edinburgh man has pleaded guilty and been sentenced on charges stemming from a May incident where he illegally entered a home.

Lawrence A. Turnbloom, 26, pleaded guilty to theft, a Level 6 felony, and criminal trespassing, a misdemeanor, in Johnson County Superior Court 2 on June 8. A misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana was dismissed as part of his plea agreement. He was originally arrested on charges of burglary, residential entry, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance.

On the first count, Turnbloom was sentenced to 545 days in an Indiana Department of Correction facility, 503 days of which were suspended to probation, and received a jail credit of 21 days, according to online court records. He actually served 21 days in prison. On the second count, he was sentenced to one year in jail, 323 of which were suspended to probation, with the rest being executed. Both counts are being served concurrently, or at the same time, online records say.

Edinburgh police were called to the 100 block of W. Main Cross St. in the early morning of May 19 after receiving a report of a residential entry in progress, according to an Edinburgh Police Department report.

When police arrived on the scene, they saw two men, one of which was Turnbloom, walk around the front of a truck outside the apartment. The second man with Turnbloom, David D. Holzhausen, 51, of Shelbyville, was also arrested and later charged.

When an officer asked what they were doing, Turnbloom said a male inside the apartment had thrown beer bottles and glass bowls at him. The officer informed the men why they were at the apartment, and the men initially said they did not go into the building and only stood outside. They said they were trying to speak to the man inside, but he did not speak English, the report says.

Police spoke with people live in the apartment, who were inside at the time of the incident. They told police they did not know what had taken place outside the apartment, but did say that both Holzhausen and Turnbloom had entered the apartment and that they had no right to be inside because they were strangers, the report says.

One tenant told police their front door was not very secure and that with some effort, anyone can get in, which is what they say Holzhausen and Turnbloom did. One tenant told police one of the men had tried to enter the locked room she was in, the report says.

Another tenant told police that Holzhausen and Turnbloom had ransacked the apartment, according to the report.

They reported that the men had taken a bag full of items from their apartment, which they were able to identify as a bag that police found with Holzhausen and Turnbloom, the report says.

Holzhausen was charged on June 21 with criminal trespassing and theft, both misdemeanors, for his actions during the incident. An initial hearing is set for Aug. 11.
