Indiana Senators honor Greenwood mall shooting victims, armed civilian

Indiana’s U.S. Senators Mike Braun and Todd Young introduced Wednesday a resolution condemning the shooting and honoring victims of the Greenwood Park Mall shooting.

The resolution honors the memory of the victims of the July 17 shooting, and praises the actions of Elisjsha Dicken, 22, of Seymour, who the senators say “valiantly engaged and thwarted the shooter.” Police say Dicken shot the gunman, Jonathan Douglas Sapirman, 20, of Greenwood, eight times at a range of 40 yards, which marksman say is a remarkable achievement that saved lives.

Mike Braun

The three victims in the shooting were Indianapolis residents, Victor Gomez and husband and wife, Pedro Pineda and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda. Two others were injured.

An announcement from Braun’s office said the resolution was expected to pass around 6 p.m. tonight.

“Hoosiers are united in mourning for the victims of the senseless shooting at the Greenwood mall and grateful for the heroic actions of the good Samaritan that prevented the shooter from taking more lives. I am proud to recognize 22-year-old Elisjsha Dicken of Seymour, Indiana here on the Senate floor today for defending himself and others in an act of bravery in the face of danger,” Braun said in a statement.

Todd Young

Young, who owns a home in Bargersville, said he is grateful for Dicken’s actions that hit so close to home.

“On July 17, a tragic shooting occurred in my home county at the Greenwood Park Mall, resulting in the deaths of three innocent victims. As we condemn the shooting and continue to grieve the lives lost in this horrific incident, we are thankful for the quick actions taken by Eli Dicken and first responders. There is no doubt that Eli’s bravery and decisive actions saved countless lives,” Young said in a statement.
