Police release report on fatal accident reported last week in Greenwood

Police say one man is dead and three juveniles were taken to the hospital after a Wednesday afternoon crash in Greenwood.

First responders were called to the 800 block of North Graham Road around 4:19 p.m Wednesday on a report of a car accident with people entrapped. A car had driven under a semi-trailer and became entrapped. There were four people inside it, police say.

Witnesses told police that a semi was turning slowly out into traffic when a car hit the semi. The car had been approaching the semi at a high rate of seed, according to a Greenwood Police Department report.

The semi-driver told police that they saw the car further down the road and that the car was originally in the fast lane. The car had changed lanes but did not appear to slow down, the report says.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to an Indianapolis hospital and died Thursday afternoon from crush injuries, police say. He was identified as Demetrius Robbins, 21, of Indianapolis, the report says.

The three other occupants of the car were all juveniles, with ages ranging from 9 to 16 years old. They were taken to an Indianapolis hospital with incapacitating injuries. An update on their current conditions was not available.

Police attribute the primary cause of the accident to the car driving at an unsafe speed. The semi driver’s failure to yield was cited as a contributing factor, the report says.
