GREENWOOD
LTC (Ret) Robert F. (Bob) Smith, died after a brief illness on August 16, 2022, in Greenwood. Born to the late Frank Smith and Kathryn Smith Zgonc on July 26, 1928, in New Albany, Indiana, Bob grew up in Indianapolis, attending Joan of Arc and St. Roch grade schools. He graduated from Southport High School in 1946.
Bob entered the US Army on November 1, 1950, served 27 years, and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel on October 31, 1977. He proudly received a degree from Marian College in 1973. He served as Director of Indiana Medicaid from 1977 to 1983. Bob and his wife, Ava, who survives, were in the nursing home business from 1987 to 2016.
Bob’s only sibling William T. Smith predeceased him.
Bob is survived by son, Gregory R. Smith (Victoria Martin, M.D.), step-granddaughters Grace and Katie Martin, Greg’s mother Jean Przybyla; and numerous in-laws and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Saturday August 27 th from 10:30am-12:00pm at Flanner Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite), 9700 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, IN 46250.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place there at 12:00pm. Online condolences may be shared at www.flannerbuchanan.com.
