Red Cross urges people to prepare for emergencies

The American Red Cross is urging Americans to get ready for weather emergencies as more frequent and intense weather events affect communities due to climate change.

Last year, more than 40% of Americans were living in a county that was struck by a climate-related disaster, Red Cross officials say, citing an analysis from the Washington Post. Disasters can happen anywhere at any time, and as Americans enter September, which is National Preparedness Month, officials say it’s vital for people to be prepared.

There are three easy steps that families can take to be prepared for disasters, according to an American Red Cross news release.

Red Cross officials say people should build an emergency kit that includes a gallon of water per person a day, non-perishable food, a flashlight and a battery-powered radio. Kits should also include a first-aid kit, a multi-tool, hygiene items, copies of important papers, cell phone charges, blankets, maps of the area and emergency contact information, Red Cross officials say.

People should have an emergency plan in place in case they are separated from their loved ones in an emergency and should be informed about what disasters could occur in their area. People should also know how local officials will contact residents during a disaster and how they will receive information during an emergency, officials say.
