Johnson County adds new Greenwood vote center after departure of The Nest

A long-time vote center will no longer be on the list of sites for voters to cast votes during the general election this October and November.

The Nest Event Center in Greenwood, formerly the site of Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria, will no longer be a vote center. The Nest moved to Indianapolis earlier this summer and the building is now home to 148 Ministries, a gym and wellness center for people recovering from abuse.

The Johnson County Election Board unanimously approved Wednesday an amendment to the plan that removed The Nest as a polling site and replaces it with Greenwood Bible Baptist Church, located at 1461 Sheek Road. The church is located less than two miles south of the former site of The Nest. The church has a lot of space and agreed to act as a vote center, said Trena McLaughlin, county clerk.

The former Nest site had been a vote center for several years, so officials have asked 148 Ministries to place signs outside the building a few days before to let people know it is no longer a vote center. The ministry agreed to this, McLaughlin said.

“I told him we would do it for this election and then probably next year’s election, just because there might be people that didn’t vote in the county, but then they’re going to vote in the city election next year,” she said.

Compass Park in Franklin is also being added as a retirement community vote center for the Nov. 8 election. For the May primary, the community was not a vote center.

Another change to the plan tweaks the listing of early voting times at the Johnson County Courthouse. The plan has always listed the times for voting, but now it says it in clearer detail, McLaughlin said.

“It’s just to clarify more for voters so they know what days were open and hours,” she said.

Early voting begins at the courthouse on Oct. 12.
