Closures for water main replacements coming to Old Town Greenwood

Main Street in Old Town Greenwood will see two major closures in the next two months for water main replacements.

Indiana American Water was given approval Wednesday for a temporary one-week closure of the intersection of Main Street and Madison Avenue to replace a water main. The intersection will be fully closed beginning on Monday, city officials say.

Drivers can follow detour routes around the closed section using Market Plaza and West Surina Way or Broadway Street to get to Meridian Street.

The water main replacement is needed to improve water flow for the fire department in the area. The plan is for the eastbound lanes to hopefully reopen 3-to-4 days into the project, IAW representative Jacquelyne Byland told the city’s Board of Public Works and Safety Wednesday.

Once the intersection fully reopens on Sept. 20, another water main project will lead to a closure of Main Street from Beechview Drive to Madison Avenue. This project, which will take place in the westbound lanes, will begin immediately after the completion of the first project, Byland said.

The second project is expected to last for two months.
