Caucus set to fill Franklin city council vacancy

A council member’s move out of the city has opened a vacancy on Franklin’s city council.

Councilmember Lisa Jones announced at last week’s meeting that it would be her last. Jones said she was conflicted because she loves her hometown and serving residents on the council, but when the opportunity to fulfill a dream of buying a house in a lake community, she had to take it.

“I am very invested in the community, so I have mixed emotions,” Jones said. “I am excited about what the future will bring to me. You’ll be seeing me around.”

She is also a member of the Franklin Board of Public Works and Safety, so Mayor Steve Barnett will also have to appoint a replacement for that board.

Jones plans to stay involved with Franklin in several ways, including through her business, Jones & Anderson, CPA, and Franklin Development Corporation, a city-affiliated board that provides grants to homeowners and businesses to invest in their properties.

Jones joined the council in March 2020, when she was selected in a caucus to fill the District 3 seat vacated by Drew Eggers, who also left the seat for a move out of the city shortly after he was elected to a second term.

Jones submitted her letter of resignation to Johnson County GOP chair Beth Boyce following the announcement. A caucus to fill the District 3 seat has been set for 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at Franklin City Hall.

Republicans who live in District 3 are eligible to run for the seat. The district includes neighborhoods west of U.S 31, south of Simon Road and north of Jefferson Street, as well as a small strip south of Jefferson Street and east of U.S. 31.

Those interested should send a letter of interest and an executed and notarized copy of a CEB-5 form to Boyce by 72 hours prior to the caucus. The packet can be mailed or delivered to 845 Richart Lane, Greenwood.

Candidates should be available to fulfill the rest of the four-year term, which would end in January 2024.

Republican precinct committee members from the district will choose from among the candidates who file at the caucus.
