College notebook: Gray in the swing of things for IWU

Sophomore Ethan Gray, a former Greenwood player, posted wins at second doubles and third singles as NAIA No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis defeated No. 5 Goshen.

Greenwood

Freshman linebacker Gavin Ruppert led Wabash College in tackles with 10 during a 48-14 win at Wooster.

Vincennes freshman Matthew Gray competed with his Trailblazers teammates at the McNichols cross country invite at Indiana State. Gray’s time was 30 minutes, 21.2 seconds. Indiana State senior Brandon Albin ran a 32:58.5.

Alyssa Stilley had seven blocks and four service aces to help Roosevelt to a five-set win at Governors State.

Center Grove

Senior Sam Jean remains in a zone as he led the Cincinnati men’s golf team to the title of its own Bearcat Invitational. Jean blazed the way with a seven-under-par total of 206 to earn individual medalist honors.

Freshman running back Daniel Weems carried the football 13 times for 134 yards to lead Indiana Wesleyan to a 34-26 victory at Olivet Nazarene. The former Center Grove standout also had a catch for nine yards.

Ball State football notched its first win of the season by blanking visiting Murray State, 31-0, behind 141 rushing yards from Carson Steele. The sophomore also made three catches for a total of nine yards.

Tennessee football improved to 3-0 with its 63-6 defeat of Akron. Freshman quarterback Tayven Jackson completed both of his pass attempts for 28 yards. He also rushed for the Volunteers’ final touchdown, a 1-yard run.

Indiana State junior Lucas Hunter made three tackles and recovered a fumble in a 49-14 home loss to Montana.

Rose-Hulman defensive back Riley Roberts made four tackles, including a quarterback sack, in the team’s 49-17 loss to visiting Albion.

DePauw receiver Trent Veith made four catches for 53 yards in the team’s 44-0 victory at Hiram.

Freshman defensive end Caden Curry finished with two tackles for Ohio State in its 77-21 win against visiting Toledo.

Wabash College linebacker Cade Lansdell made three tackles in a 48-14 win at Wooster.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Matt Hohlt had a tackle for Indiana in its 33-30 overtime win over visiting Western Kentucky.

Purdue Fort Wayne freshman Bella Hodges finished 79th at the McNichols cross country invitational. Also competing was UIndy sophomore Gabrielle Harrell (90th).

Hanover freshman Lauren Todd placed fifth at the Runs with the Lions Invite in Shelbyville, running a time of 26 minutes, 18.3 seconds.

Indiana men’s golf placed 12th at the Fighting Illini Invitational in Chicago; senior Noah Gillard tied for 47th individually with scores of 71, 73 and 76.

Grace College senior Lucy Young finished in the top 10 individually as the Lancers won the Lawrence Tech Invitational.

Sophomore middle blocker Grace Boggess finished with a total of 10 kills over three matches for Butler volleyball as it hosted the Bulldog Brawl.

Trey Thixton posted victories both at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles as Indiana Wesleyan’s men’s tennis downed No. 5 Goshen, 5-2.

Franklin

UIndy women’s golfer Ava Ray tied for 51st as the Greyhounds competed at the BDU Classic in Denton, Texas.

University of Indianapolis junior Andrew Bixler finished 89th overall as the Greyhounds competed at the McNichols cross country meet in Terre Haute. Representing Franklin College were sophomores Eli Cochrane (115th), Drew McGaha and Brayden Devenport.

Junior Brooke Phillips had 11 digs for IUPUI volleyball in its three-set home loss to Green Bay.

Marian tight end Drew Byerly made one catch for nine yards in the Knights’ 31-7 victory over St. Francis (Illinois).

Ball State linebacker Clayton Coll made six tackles as the Cardinals shut out visiting Murray State, 31-0.

Senior defensive back Tyce Miller made four tackles and intercepted a pass for Rose-Hulman in its 49-17 loss to visiting Albion.

Indian Creek

Freshman Braxton Christie helped Franklin College men’s golf to a fourth-place finish at the Forest Hills Invitational, tying for 20th individually with scores of 85 and 76.

Whiteland

Franklin College junior Zach Ricketts tied for 15th individually with a two-round score of 159 as the men’s golf team competed in the Forest Hills Invitational at Earlham.

Butler freshman defensive back Quinn Warweg made two tackles and broke up a pass in the Bulldogs’ 45-17 loss at South Dakota State.

Roncalli

Grace Hegwood of Greenwood led the UIndy volleyball squad with 15 kills and 18 digs in its five-set loss at McKendree.

Ball State defensive lineman and Greenwood native John Harris made two tackles and broke up a pass in a 31-0 win over Murray State.
