College notebook: Thixton qualifies for NAIA nationals in doubles

Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis player Trey Thixton was part of the doubles tandem that won at the Midwest Regional by a score of 7-5, 5-7, 11-9. The Center Grove graduate is now qualified for next weekend’s NAIA nationals in Rome, Georgia.

Senior defensive lineman Cade Lansdell made eight tackles for Wabash College as it won at Wittenberg, 42-35.

Freshman running back Daniel Weems rushed for 23 yards for NAIA No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan as it downed No. 15 Concordia, 26-13. Weems also caught a pass for four yards.

DePauw sophomore Trent Veith contributed two catches for 28 yards and a touchdown to the Tigers’ 17-13 triumph over Denison. Teammate Dane Young, a sophomore defensive back, made six tackles and intercepted a pass.

Sophomore Carson Steele carried the football 24 times for 77 yards and three touchdowns as Ball State defeated visiting Northern Illinois in double overtime, 44-38. Steele also caught three passes for 15 yards.

Grace College senior Lucy Young helped Grace College women’s golf finish fourth of seven teams at the Saints Classic in South Bend, shooting two scores of 87.

Jamie Brown had five kills and two digs as Indiana State volleyball lost in four sets at Murray State.

Freshman Katie Egenolf finished with three kills for Ball State as it downed visiting Eastern Michigan in four sets.

Wisconsin junior setter Madison Hammill had 12 assists and three digs in a victory over visiting Penn State, and 20 assists, 11 digs and a service ace in a five-set triumph over visiting Illinois.

Freshman Bella Hodges placed 149th in a time of 19:34.5 as the Purdue-Fort Wayne women’s cross country team competed at the Live in Lou Classic.

Franklin College men’s golf placed sixth of nine teams at the Stateline Shootout/HCAC Preview. Freshman Braxton Christie posted the team’s second-lowest two-round total (158).

Taylor sophomore golfer Ellie Beavins finished 12th individually at the Saints Classic in South Bend, carding two rounds of 82.

Sophomore Damon Dickey shot scores of 73, 72 and 70 to finish tied for fifth individually and help Butler men’s golf place second at the 14-team Tom Tontimonia Invitational.

The Franklin College trio of juniors Eli Cochrane (28:41.5), Wyatt McCullough (29:32.6) and Drew McGaha (31:52.0) took part in the Greater LouisvilleClassic, helping the Grizzlies to a 25th-place standing out of 45 teams.

Marian junior tight end Drew Byerly made a catch covering 10 yards as the Knights remained unbeaten with a 67-7 disposal of visiting Taylor.

Junior linebacker Clayton Coll made three tackles for Ball State in its 44-38 win against visiting Northern Illinois.

IUPUI junior Brooke Phillips had 11 digs and three service aces as the Jaguars volleyball team won in five sets at Youngstown State. She added 10 digs and two assists in a victory at Robert Morris.

Junior Mallory Watson ran a time of 22:37.2 for the Franklin College women’s cross country team, helping it to a 24th-place finish out of 40 schools at the Greater Louisville Classic. Sophomore Noah McCracken competed for the Grizzly men, completing his race in 31:11.6.

Wabash College freshman linebacker Gavin Ruppert led the Little Giants in tackles with 10 in the team’s 42-35 win at Wittenberg.

Manchester junior outside hitter Joy Maze finished with seven kills and three digs in the Spartans’ four-set loss to Hanover.

Senior middle blocker Alyssa Stilley finished with three kills as the Roosevelt volleyball team lost in three sets to St. Xavier.

Freshman defensive back Quinn Warweg made four tackles for the Butler football squad in a 31-0 loss at Davidson.

Franklin College freshman Abby Eads ran a time of 26:19.3 as the Grizzlies took part in the Greater Louisville Classic.

Zach Ricketts had a two-round score of 170 for Franklin College men’s golf as it placed sixth of nine teams at the Stateline Shootout/HCAC Preview.

Senior Grace Hegwood provided the University of Indianapolis volleyball team three kills and four digs in a 3-0 shutout at Quincy (Illinois), and 16 kills, 11 digs and two service aces in a five-set win at Truman State.
