College notebook: Coll leads BSU defense in road win

Ball State junior linebacker Clayton Coll, a Franklin graduate, recorded a team-high 13 tackles and forced a fumble in the Cardinals’ 17-16 victory at Central Michigan.

Franklin

Marian tight end Drew Byerly made a 29-yard reception as the Knights, the fifth-ranked team in NAIA, lost 17-10 at home against No. 7 Indiana Wesleyan.

Senior defensive back Tyce Miller recorded a pair of tackles and returned an interception 46 yards for Rose-Hulman in its 48-14 win over visiting Manchester.

Taylor senior golfer Javan Johnson helped his team rally to capture the 11-team Egypt Valley Championships. Johnson placed third individually, carding scores of 77, 72 and 73.

Matt Jordan tied for 65th individually with a three-round total of 237 as Eastern Kentucky men’s golf placed 12th at the Xavier Invitational.

IUPUI volleyball player Brooke Phillips totaled 15 digs in three-set home losses to Northern Kentucky and Wright State.

Center Grove

Junior defensive lineman Lucas Hunter finished with 11 tackles, including one for loss, for Indiana State in its 31-26 loss to visiting North Dakota State.

Indiana Wesleyan freshman Daniel Weems rushed for 40 yards and a touchdown, and also caught three passes to help the NAIA No. 7 Wildcats win at No. 5 Marian, 17-10.

Senior linebacker Riley Roberts made seven tackles, including 2.5 for loss, as Rose-Hulman celebrated homecoming with a 48-14 defeat of Manchester.

Ball State running back Carson Steele rushed for 124 yards and caught two passes in the Cardinals’ 17-16 triumph at Central Michigan.

DePauw sophomore defensive back Dane Young made six tackles for the Tigers as they suffered their first loss of the season, 30-7, at Wittenberg.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Matt Hohlt made two tackles for Indiana in its 31-10 home loss to Michigan.

Indiana senior golfer Noah Gillard tied for 24th individually with a 7-over-par three-round score of 223, helping the Hoosiers place sixth at the Purdue Fall Invitational.

The Marian men’s golf team competed at the NAIA Memphis Shootout, with sophomore Brandon Heffner tying for 27th individually with scores of 72, 74 and 81.

Duke senior Erica Shepherd placed seventh individually after carding a 4-under-par total of 212 during the stroke-play portion of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup. Shepherd then defeated South Carolina’s Mathilde Claisse, 5 and 4, in match play to help the Blue Devils finish the event in third place.

Sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Eck completed Eckerd College’s volleyball shutout win at Florida Tech with 19 digs and two service aces. She followed with 14 digs, two assists and two aces in a three-set victory at St. Leo, and 16 digs, six assists and two aces in a five-set decision over visiting Tampa.

Wisconsin setter Madison Hammill had 23 assists, seven digs and three services aces as the Badgers won at Purdue in four sets.

Freshman Katie Egenolf had two kills and a dig for the Ball State volleyball squad in its home victory over Akron.

Indiana State junior Jamie Brown had four kills in a five-set home defeat of Missouri State and six kills and an assist in a loss to visiting Southern Illinois.

Greenwood

Manchester junior outside hitter Joy Maze totaled 19 kills and 14 digs in the team’s home volleyball losses to Bluffton, Earlham and Huntington.

Junior Maecee Terhune won her match at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2, as Franklin College women’s tennis downed Earlham, 8-1.

Whiteland

Butler defensive back Quinn Warweg made three tackles as the Bulldogs blanked visiting Dayton, 31-0.

Franklin College freshman Brenna Atchison helped the No. 2 doubles tandem win against Earlham in the Grizzlies’ 8-1 victory.

Edinburgh

Freshman Bethany Burton won her match at No. 3 singles as Franklin College women’s tennis scored an 8-1 defeat of Earlham.

University of Indianapolis senior volleyball player Grace Hegwood (Greenwood) had 12 kills, six digs and two service aces in the team’s home win over William Jewell. Hegwood supplied 13 kills, 10 digs and an ace in a five-set loss to visiting Rockhurst.
