Lancers claim sectional championship

Edinburgh won its third-ever Class A sectional title and first in 11 years on Saturday, sweeping Oldenburg Academy and South Decatur to leave Waldron with a trophy in tow.

The Lancers (19-9) breezed past the Cougars in the title match, 25-17, 25-17, 25-13, led by a dominating 14-kill, five-block, 21-dig effort from Gracie Crawhorn. Kyah Streeval dished out 27 assists, while four other players collected double-digit digs on the back row.

Edinburgh had topped the Twisters in a semifinal match, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23. MacKenzie Bieker had 15 kills and 28 digs in that win, with Crawhorn adding 13 kills and 24 digs and Streeval 30 assists.

Having advanced, the Lancers get to host regional action this coming Saturday and will face Indiana Deaf in a semifinal match. Indianapolis Lutheran meets White River Valley in the other semi.

Braves come up short of 3A crown

Indian Creek survived a five-set semifinal war with Brown County before seeing its season come to an end in a 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 loss to Northview in the championship match at the Class 3A Edgewood Sectional. The Braves (16-13) had reached the final by outlasting the Eagles 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-10.

Cougars ousted by Saints in title match

Greenwood Christian came up short in the final at the Class A Central Christian Sectional on Saturday, taking a 25-6, 25-12, 25-13 loss to Indianapolis Lutheran. The Cougars (12-12) had steamrolled Providence Cristo Rey in the semifinal round, 25-3, 25-5, 25-6.

Royals fall in sectional final

Roncalli’s season reached its end Saturday with a 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18 home setback against Class 4A No. 4 Brebeuf Jesuit in a sectional championship match. Faith Burch had 18 kills and 12 digs in defeat for the Royals (22-9), who had previously rolled to a 25-3, 25-17, 25-6 triumph over Decatur Central in the semifinal.

Swimming and diving opens season

The Franklin College men and women opened their season Saturday with a second-place effort at the Indiana D-III Invitational in Terre Haute, The Grizzly men totaled 599 points and got event wins from Jack Burke in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, Gauge Creech in both 1- and 3-meter diving and Vincent Fletcher in the 50 freestyle. Burke, Kosmo Wojack, Fletcher and Kyle Haflich won the 200 medley relay.

For the women, who scored 678 points, Caileigh McCafferty was first in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley. Also claiming first-place finishes were Samantha Phillips (100 and 200 butterfly), Faith Jackson (1- and 3-meter diving), Erin Perkins (1,000 freestyle) and the 400 free relay team of Grace Williams, Becky Pfeifer, Perkins and Jyllian Antle.

Men’s soccer rallies for road win

Eddy Yousak scored a pair of goals as Franklin College earned a 4-2 comeback win at Earlham. Htoo Ray Moo and Thomas Samuel also tallied for the Grizzlies (3-9, 3-3 HCAC).
