College notebook: Eck shines for Tritons in tourney

Sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Eck, a Center Grove graduate, completed play with totals of 36 digs, three assists and five service aces as Eckerd College volleyball won all three of its matches at the South Region Crossover in Birmingham, Alabama.

Center Grove

Carson Steele carried the football 32 times for 179 yards and three touchdowns to lead Ball State to a 25-21 victory over visiting Connecticut.

Senior defensive lineman Cade Lansdell made four tackles as Wabash College defeated visiting Ohio Wesleyan, 41-24.

Rose-Hulman linebacker Riley Roberts made three tackles and intercepted a pass for a 22-yard touchdown return as the Engineers won, 48-20, at Bluffton.

Freshman Daniel Weems carried the ball 15 times for 50 yards as Indiana Wesleyan won at Lawrence Tech, 35-14.

DePauw defensive back Dane Young made six tackles in the Tigers’ 30-7 loss to visiting Wittenberg.

Indiana Wesleyan senior Trey Thixton was part of the doubles team that won its first match at the NAIA nationals in Rome, Georgia, eventually securing a top-six finish nationally.

Marian sophomores Brandon Heffner and Sam Slaughter placed 53rd and 57th individually, respectively, as the Knights took part in the Whistling Straits Championship in Wisconsin.

Duke senior Erica Shepherd had a 54-hole score of 216 at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Indiana men’s golf placed 10th at the 16-team Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, Florida, with senior Noah Gillard shooting a 1-over-par total of 217.

Junior Jamie Brown had three kills and a dig for Indiana State volleyball in a five-set loss at Illinois State. She duplicated these numbers in a three-set loss at Bradley.

Butler sophomore Grace Boggess provided five kills in both a four-set home defeat of Seton Hall and a loss to visiting St. John’s.

Setter Madison Hammill finished with 24 assists and 11 digs as host Wisconsin downed Michigan in four sets.

Senior diver Gauge Creech was named HCAC male diver of the week for the 14th time in his career after handily winning the 1- and 3-meter events at the Indiana D-III Invitational.

Taylor men’s golf took second at the Whistling Straits Championship, with senior Javan Johnson shooting a team-best score of 78. Huntington also participated, led by sophomore Quin Edwards with a round of 86.

Freshman Ava Ray tied for 32nd individually as the University of Indianapolis women’s golf squad won the Dayton Fall Invitational.

Senior defensive back Tyce Miller contributed two tackles and two interceptions to the Rose-Hulman defense in a 48-20 victory at Bluffton.

Junior linebacker Clayton Coll made 12 tackles for host Ball State in its 25-21 victory against Connecticut.

Franklin College senior Faith Jackson took home HCAC female diver of the week honors for a 12th time in her career after placing first at the Indiana D-III Invitational in both the 1- and 3-meter events.

Freshman defensive specialist Melia Gorrell had four digs, three assists and a service ace in Wheeling University’s three-set volleyball sweep against visiting Fairmont State.

Wabash College freshman linebacker Gavin Ruppert had eight tackles and broke up two passes in the team’s 41-24 victory over visiting Ohio Wesleyan.

Franklin College junior Maecee Terhune was named all-HCAC honorable mention in women’s tennis for the third time in her career after playing No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles for the Grizzlies this fall.
