Donald Herman Smith

MOORESVILLE

Donald Herman Smith was born on December 19, 1940. He married Velva Jean Barger on November 21, 1959. He officially had four children, twelve grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. He also had many grandkids that he unofficially adopted through the years, including five in Haiti. He died on Sunday, October 23, 2022, listening to “Amazing Grace” and surrounded by family in Mooresville, Indiana at the young age of 81.

He made us promise we wouldn’t fuss over him in death, so we are celebrating his life. The love he had for his wife was insurmountable and the size of his heart was infinite. Anyone who met him felt his love and warmth. He had a passion for Haiti and Mission Trakaye, a non-profit ministry of his grandchildren – Frantzy, Jenny, Austin and Meica Louis.

He was far from perfect, using duct tape to fix most things or just banging it with a hammer to make it fit. He loved Jesus, black licorice, and a dog named Finn. The job was never done until he was bleeding!

We will never be able to express the love we have for him, the stories we shared with him and all the many laughs we had, but he will live on through all of us. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to Mission Trakaye to complete a nursing home in Haiti that he helped start building. Donations can be sent to Mission Trakaye at 1294 E SR 42, Center Point Indiana 47840.

God Saw You Getting Tired

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be

So he put His arms around you and whispered “Come to me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you as you slowly slipped away

And though we loved you dearly we couldn’t make you stay.

Your golden heart stopped beating, your tired hands put to rest

God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
