Health insurance marketplace enrollment opens

The open enrollment period for 2023 health insurance coverage through marketplace and other individual plans has arrived, and the Indiana Department of Insurance has tips to guide Hoosiers through the enrollment process.

Tuesday was the first day residents could enroll in, re-enroll in or change a 2023 health plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The Indiana Department of Insurance provides a Marketplace Insurance Providers Map to help residents determine what insurance providers are available in each county, according to an Indiana Department of Insurance news release.

There are several important dates coming up as the enrollment process begins:

  • Dec. 15: Last day to enroll in or change plans for coverage starting on Jan. 1, 2023.
  • Jan. 15, 2023: Last day to enroll in or change a 2023 health plan. After this date, Hoosiers can enroll in or change plans only if they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
  • Feb. 1, 2023: Coverage for 2023 starts for those who enroll in or change plans from Dec. 16, 2022, to Jan. 15, 2023.

If someone already has coverage through a marketplace plan, they should review it to make sure it is accurate. Residents can update applications with any income and/or household changes, and may qualify for a different amount of financial assistance or find a different plan that costs less and/or better meets needs, according to the news release.

The NAIC’s Health Insurance Shopping Tool can help residents understand how different policies support their health care needs. The tool provides a 3-step process to compare different health insurance policies, state officials say.

If someone’s plan is no longer available in 2023, they should receive a notice from their insurer and the marketplace. If Hoosiers are looking for new plans, there are three categories of health insurance plans to choose from on the marketplace — bronze, silver and gold. They are broken up by how costs are shared between the patient and insurer. Another category, catastrophic, is available for consumers under 30 years of age or who face a hardship in accessing the other plans, state officials say.
