Aspire Johnson County to host active shooter trainings this month

Aspire Johnson County will host an active shooter and workplace violence training later this month.

The program will include training on prevention and response to active shooters and other workplace violence. It also will focus on myth versus fact, what to expect from police response and three steps for survival, according to Aspire.

The program will be tailored to the office setting and other workplace environments, chamber officials say.

John O’Rourke, a retired law enforcement officer, will lead the training. He was hired by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in 1993 as a corrections officer at the county jail. Two years later, O’Rourke was hired by the Bargersville Police Department, where he spent 12 years, almost eight of those years as the Chief of Police. He later returned to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in 2008, according to Aspire.

O’Rourke was one of only three deputies certified to teach STOP – Strategies and Tactics Of Patrol stops. He has been involved in several active shooter training sessions over the years and received a certificate of training from Texas A&M. He is retired now, but still provides training for law enforcement and civilians, chamber officials say.

The first session will take place on Nov. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Franklin Community High School, 2600 Cumberland Drive. The second session will take place on Nov. 30 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Greenwood Public Library, 310 S. Meridian St., according to Aspire.

To register, people should go online to aspirejohnsoncounty.com and click on the “Events” page. Both sessions are free.
