I-69 update: New Southport Road traffic pattern effective Monday

The new Southport Road bridge over the future Interstate 69 and the new southbound State Road 37 exit ramp are expected to open before the Monday commute.

The existing State Road 37 traffic signal and Southport Road to the east will connect with the new alignment at a traffic signal east of State Road 37, Indiana Department of Transportation officials said in a traffic update.

The road will remain open temporarily for the following traffic movements:

  • Northbound State Road 37 to Southport Road
  • Southport Road to northbound State Road 37
  • Southport Road to southbound State Road 37

Traffic on Southport Road will encounter four new traffic signals at the interchange ramps and local roads east and west of State Road 37. The signal at Wellingshire Boulevard and the realigned Belmont Avenue was activated earlier this week, INDOT officials say.

The new traffic pattern will take effect in phases between 6 p.m. Sunday and 5 a.m. on Monday, weather permitting. Traffic signals will be realigned on the new Southport Road and at the S.R. 37 and Harding Street intersections. Motorists should anticipate up to 20-minute stoppages at each of these intersections during the traffic switch, INDOT officials say.

It is the first of several traffic changes drivers should expect as the new interchange opens to traffic, INDOT officials say.
