Baird elected to board of Indiana county association

Johnson County Commissioner Brian Baird was elected 2023 Secretary of the Indiana Association of County Commissioners, or IACC, during their annual conference recently.

As secretary of IACC’s Board of Directors, Baird will represent the elected county commissioners in Indiana’s 92 counties on the board, which determines policies and legislative goals for the association, according to a press release from IACC.

“Baird will be a great spokesperson for our association and is very dedicated to improving local government,” said Tom Wall, a Huntington County Commissioner, in a statement on Baird’s appointment.

Mark Heirbrandt of Hamilton County was elected president; Kellie Streeter of Knox County was elected vice president; and Suzanne Weirick or Elkhart County was elected treasurer during the meeting as well.

The election was held during the IACC’s 2022 annual conference, the largest gathering of county commissioners in the state. The three-day conference included several different workshops and breakout sessions that were designed to skill up county commissioners and their support staff in key areas such as the Next Level Broadband Grant, the Open Door Law, road funding and disaster preparedness, according to the release.

IACC is a nonprofit organization that provides education, support and advocacy services to county commissioners, according to IACC’s website. The organization’s objectives are to “promote cooperation of the county unit with all other units of local government, and with state and federal agencies; and to promote improvement and efficiency in the delivery of county government services,” the website says.

The board is composed of five executive officers and the president and vice-president of each of the six districts, according to the IACC. The 17-member board meets monthly.
