Death of Indy man found near Bargersville pond ruled homicide

The death of an Indianapolis man whose body was found in Bargersville has been ruled a homicide.

Angel Luna, 19, died of multiple gunshot wounds, with the cause of death ruled homicide, the Johnson County Coroner’s Office announced Friday morning. An autopsy took place earlier on Friday, and toxicology results are pending.

Luna was found near a pond adjacent to a field just south of Aspen Trace, a senior living facility at 3145 S. State Road 135, Bargersville. His body was found during a search of the area after the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department pinged a cellphone near Clary Boulevard South Drive and State Road 135, Bargersville police spokesperson Jeremy Roll said Thursday.

The phone was pinged as part of a missing person’s investigation. He was reported as missing to IMPD on Nov. 22 — his 19th birthday — according to Indiana State Police missing person records.

Officers began searching the pinged area beginning around 9 a.m. Thursday, starting east of State Road 135 within Greenwood’s jurisdiction. The search eventually went west across State Road 135 into Bargersville jurisdiction, and Bargersville police were notified a body was found around 11:45 a.m., Roll said.

Police have not said whether Luna’s death occurred where his body was found, but Roll said the body had been there for “a while.”

With the coroner’s ruling, the investigation has now been elevated to a homicide investigation. Bargersville detectives began investigating the incident as such on Thursday, and are following leads to gather information, the department said in a news release Friday.

“This is not believed to be a random act of violence,” Roll said in the news release.

Bargersville police, IMPD and other agencies are still investigating the incident. Franklin police and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office were assisting on Thursday.
