Man killed in Greenwood construction accident identified

Officials have released the name of the man who died following an accident at The Madison construction site Friday.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Larry Stinson, 53, of Indianapolis. His cause of death was determined to be the result of multiple blunt force trauma from the accident, officials said Monday.

Greenwood police and firefighters were called around 3 p.m. Friday to the 500 block of S. Madison Avenue on a report of a man being pinned in a pit at The Madison construction site. When officers arrived, they found that a concrete box had fallen from a crane at the construction site, pinning the man now identified as Stinson, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief of police.

Based on preliminary reports, construction workers were lowering the concrete box — which is used for drainage — into the pit when it somehow landed on Stinson. It also appears Stinson was instantly pulled out of the pit once workers were able to safely get him out, Fillenwarth said.

Medics performed CPR on Stinson at the scene. He was taken to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead, Fillenwarth said.

Right now, the incident is believed to be a workplace accident, and the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or IOSHA, has been notified. Greenwood police are conducting a death investigation in connection to the accident as well, he said.
