Johnson County snow total rises, temperatures to plummet

Johnson County is now under a Winter Storm Warning as a “significant” storm system approaches.

A Winter Storm Warning was issued for a majority of Indiana at 12:13 p.m. Wednesday and is in effect from 3 p.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday.

Heavy snowfall is expected, with total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches expected. The heaviest snowfall is expected starting Thursday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Blowing snow is also expected as wind gusts could reach as high as 55 miles per hour, meteorologists say.

Dangerous cold is also expected and wind chills could reach as low as minus 30 degrees. A flash freeze is also expected Thursday night as temperatures are expected to drop more than 30 degrees in a matter of hours, meteorologists say.

Here’s a look at the latest forecast from the National Weather Service for Thursday through Saturday:

  • Thursday: Drizzle before 7 a.m., then rain showers until 4 p.m., rain and snow showers after 4 p.m. High near 40. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
  • Thursday night: Snow showers, mainly before 1 a.m. Snow could be heavy at times. Widespread blowing snow, mainly after 10 p.m. Low around minus 4. Wind chill values as low as minus 30. Breezy, with a west wind of 17 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.
  • Friday: Isolated snow showers. Widespread blowing snow. Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 3. Breezy, with a west wind of 25 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
  • Friday night: Widespread blowing snow, mainly before 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around zero. Breezy.
