Pedestrian dies after being struck twice in Whiteland

A pedestrian died after being struck twice by vehicles in the 2600 block of Whiteland Road Wednesday evening.

Kevin Lee Pringle, 43, of Whiteland died of injuries sustained in a quick series of two accidents stemming from a tragic mistake, said Rick Shipp, Whiteland police chief.

Whiteland police and fire departments were called out at approximately 6 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a pedestrian struck, Shipp identified the pedestrian as Pringle on Thursday afternoon. Preliminary reports said Pringle was in the road attempting to stop traffic on Whiteland Road when he was struck, said Eric Funkhouser, Whiteland fire chief.

Pringle was first struck by a vehicle headed westbound and the impact of that crash threw him into the path of an eastbound vehicle, Funkhouser said.

Whiteland police investigated the incident and determined the preliminary report was correct. Witnesses told police Pringle was attempting to stop traffic on Whiteland Road to let someone out of his driveway, Shipp said.

Tragically, he did not see the oncoming westbound vehicle before stepping out into traffic. The driver of the eastbound car he had been attempting to stop also did not see him in time to stop, police determined.

Pringle passed away at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after being transported there in serious condition.

At the time of the accident he was wearing black, conditions were total dark and he was not wearing reflective gear or carrying a flashlight, Shipp said.

People should avoid walking around at night, or especially into a street, without light clothing and reflective gear so drivers will be more likely to see them in dark conditions.
