UPDATE: Shooting reported at Greenwood Park Mall; police searching for suspects

Shots were fired at the Greenwood Park Mall, but no one was hit.

Initial reports indicate there were three to four Black males who fired shots in the parking lot outside of Dick’s Sporting Goods near Sears, said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant chief of the Greenwood Police Department. The incident happened sometime after 5 p.m. Friday.

There is currently no danger to the public outside the mall and there never was a danger to the public inside the mall, Fillenwarth said. The mall was cleared of shoppers as a precaution in line with police protocol, he said.

Police don’t know what the altercation was about, but are gathering information from witnesses at the scene, Fillenwarth said. They have a working description of the vehicle and individuals to follow up on, he said.

As of now, only one injury was sustained in the incident, a bystander who injured their knee running away in the chaos that unfolded after the shots were fired, he said.

This incident comes less than six months after a mass shooting took place at the mall in July, where three victims and the gunman died.

“It’s terrible people have to fear stuff life this,” Fillenwarth said during a media briefing at the mall Friday. “I don’t think any community likes this happening in their city. We as a police department certainly don’t like it happening, and we take it very seriously.”

Greenwood police are asking any witnesses to the incident to call the non-emergency line for Johnson County Dispatch at 317-346-6336.
