Three juveniles injured, one critically in Sunday car accident in Whiteland

One juvenile is in critical condition and two others were injured after their car flipped multiple times during a Sunday car accident in Whiteland.

First responders were called around 5:30 p.m. Sunday to the 600 block of Paul Hand Boulevard on a report of a vehicle accident near the Louisville & Indiana Railroad tracks. Based on preliminary reports, three juveniles were in the vehicle traveling westbound when they hit the train tracks and lost control of their vehicle, said Eric Funkhouser, Whiteland fire chief.

After the juveniles lost control of their vehicle, the car ended up flipping several times. One of the occupants was ejected from the backseat, Funkhouser said.

When firefighters arrived, they found the car inverted. All three juveniles were conscious and alert when firefighters arrived on scene, he said.

The juvenile who was ejected is suffering from head trauma and was transported to I.U. Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Funkhouser said. The juvenile is still in critical condition as of Monday evening, Whiteland Police Chief Rick Shipp said in a statement Tuesday.

The second juvenile was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis in stable condition, while the third juvenile signed a release form with their family and went to seek medical treatment on their own, Funkhouser said.

The Whiteland Police Department is actively investigating the accident, and it remains under investigation, Shipp said.
