Legislation, elections and candidates — oh my!

This is the first monthly column by the League of Women Voters of Johnson County, or LWVJC. We will write about legislation and elections and other matters that impact our daily life. Today, we’re sharing basic information about the League of Women Voters.

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed when we hear and read a torrent of daily news about housing, healthcare, fair wages, clean air and water, education and more. By joining with people who have resources and feel passionate about issues, we are energized, and we learn how to work together to make change happen. The League of Women Voters is an ideal organization for this.

The League’s mission is to empower voters and defend democracy. We do this through education and advocacy. We educate ourselves and our community and we advocate for good government on all levels.

All League-sponsored work is strictly nonpartisan. We never support or oppose candidates or political parties at any level of government. We are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion in all League activities. We provide facts and encourage people to be informed and actively participate in all levels of government.

Indiana’s local and state officers and legislators write and pass legislation that impacts our daily lives. They determine how our tax dollars are spent. A strong, healthy democracy depends on all citizens being informed and actively involved.

As a local League, we are part of a nationwide network of dedicated volunteers who are working to strengthen our democracy and our communities. Being a member of the League of Women Voters of Johnson County is fun and personally fulfilling.

The Leagues of Women Voters of the United States and Indiana were established in 1920 soon after the 19th Amendment granted some women the right to vote. On June 8, 2022, the League of Women Voters of Johnson County became Indiana’s 24th local League and one of more than 750 local leagues nationally. All people are eligible to join; persons 16 years and older can be voting members.

Please join us to enjoy a ten-minute slide presentation and share your thoughts and concerns about issues that are important to you as a resident of Johnson County and the surrounding area.

We’ll give two presentations at the Greenwood Public Library, 310 South Meridian Street, Greenwood on Jan. 12; first at 10 to 11 a.m. and again 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Both presentations are the same.

Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings. The next LWVJC members meeting is Jan. 19 6:15 to 7:45 p.m. at the Clark Pleasant Branch of the Johnson County Public Library, 350 Clearwater Blvd, Whiteland.

We hope to see you there. Become an active partner in democracy.
