GPL Column: Not your typical library

I’m often asked if there is really a need for public libraries or if anyone really uses them anymore. Because, really, what’s the point in a library when everyone has the internet on their phone? Sound familiar?

Maybe you think the library is great for other people, parents of preschoolers, or people who have lots of free time for reading. I’ll let you in on a secret, yes, we have storytimes and activities for kids, and books for readers of all levels and interests, but there is so much more happening at the Greenwood Public Library.

This gem in the heart of old town Greenwood is a hive of activity almost every moment that it is open – and sometimes even when it’s closed. We recently hosted a murder mystery event after hours where participants had to search for clues and question each other in order to solve the mystery.

This month we are hosting another after hours event for adults. Library After Dark will be a time to recapture some of the fun of being a kid in the library. There will be games, music, a scavenger hunt, crafts, snacks and so much more. But the best part? No “shushing” and no children. This event is an over 21 night out that’s all about spending a couple of hours with friends and neighbors just having fun and being a little silly.

These “not-your-typical-library-programs” aren’t limited to occasional events or even limited to the library itself. Twice a month you can find GPL librarians running trivia nights at Hoosier Brewing Company. Put your knowledge to the test either individually or as part of a team. Either way, there’s sure to be lots of laughs and even some prizes. The questions vary each session with some upcoming topics including Sportsball, Romantic Comedies and Curiosities. (Please don’t make fun of the librarians for saying sportsball. They try, but they just don’t get it.)

In February we’re inviting just the ladies to join us for a special “Galentine’s Day” party at Hoosier Brewing Company. The 90’s Tiger Beat theme is sure to be a hit. If you remember when Justin, Brittany, Christina and Ryan were part of the Mickey Mouse Club, this might be the party for you! Gather your gal pals and get your beanie babies and Tamagotchis out of storage. You don’t want to miss this one so be sure to visit the library website to register.

If you want to learn more about these events, and everything else going on at the Greenwood Public Library, visit our website and be sure to follow us on social media. Or better yet, stop by anytime and take a look around. You never know what you might find.
