Stephen W. Suckow

FRANKLIN

Stephen W. Suckow, 85, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at his residence in Franklin, Indiana. He was a former longtime resident of Columbus, Indiana.

Steve was born on January 14, 1937 in Franklin, Indiana to William Richard and Mildred (Whitehead) Suckow. He married Jerrie (Henry) Suckow on August 9, 1959. She lovingly survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Carol Lynn Suckow of Maui, Hawaii and Suzanne Normington (Brent) of Indianapolis, Indiana; two grandsons, Matthew Stephenson Kiel (Heather) and Lucas Normington (Elizabeth) and two great-granddaughters, Maryn Kiel and Emery Kiel. He was preceded in passing by his parents and brother, William “Bill” Suckow.

Steve was a 1955 graduate of Franklin High School and a 1959 graduate of Franklin College where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He received his Master’s degree in Library Science from Indiana University.

For 36 years from 1967-2003, Steve was the Director of the Bartholomew County Public Library in Columbus, Indiana. He was President of the Indiana Library Association in 1974-1975 and represented Indiana on the American Library Association Council for several years. He served on the board of the Visitors Center and Columbus Pro Musica. He was on the alumni board of the Indiana University School of Library Science and also served on the Indiana State Advisory Council. Steve was a longtime member of the Columbus Rotary Club.

Steve enjoyed antiquing with his beloved wife, Jerrie. Together, they took shopping trips all over Indiana and had a special fondness for Nashville, Indiana where they regularly frequented That Sandwich Place and the Hobnob restaurants. He enjoyed trivia, reading and was a huge history buff with an extensive collection of Civil and World War books. He was very proud of his two daughters and grandsons and enjoyed spending time with his loving family.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, January 18th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 North Morton Street, (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. A Celebration of Steve’s life will be conducted on Wednesday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with burial following at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Indiana.
